What is clomipramine (Anafranil)?
Clomipramine (Anafranil) is in a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Clomipramine affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause obsessive-compulsive disorder. Clomipramin has had a wide usage for the treatment of depression, but nowadays SSRI medicines are used instead, since they have the same positive effect but less unwanted side effects.
Clomipramine is used to relieve symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder such as recurrent thoughts or feelings and repetitive actions.
Clomipramine increases the pain killing effects of opioids (morphine, methadone, etc.)
Clomipramine may also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
